Train Station
Central Station in downtown Amsterdam is literally central. There is an information kiosk at the entrance with clerks who speak English. It’s busy! Around 200,000 people a day using national and international trains and four lines of the metro system as well as buses and the free IJ ferries for the north side Ask questions, buy tickets, rent lockers, get to the airport, or sit and people watch.
The main station, renovated in 2018, is brick with wood ceilings, iron detail and wins the charm award. You need a ticket to enter the lower level which is modern beige and as inspiring BUT Sight lines are perfect, signage is easy to understand, main hall is wide to accommodate the crowds a
nd allow you to see which track you are looking for. It is bright and airy, with lots of kiosks, food stands and necessities.
The track level - airy, easy to find your track but if your first time, ask someone how to find where to stand for your car. It is on a sign above you but I found it confusing until it was explained to me. The best people to ask? A twenty something and a businessman who has a brief case. Both travel a lot, They will be efficient and accurate. The 20 something may even escort you.
